Choosing the Right Nicotine Strength

When you purchase your vape, you may see nicotine strength displayed in different ways. Either as a percentage or in milligrams. They both display the same amount of nicotine within each millilitre (ml) of e-liquid.

The lower the milligram or millilitre or percentage, the less nicotine is contained in the e-liquid. For instance, an 18mg or 1.8% is much stronger than a 3mg or 0.3%.

There are also other factors that can affect this choice. It could be the e-cig you are using or the way that you vape.

E-liquid Nicotine Strength

E-liquid strength is extremely important because the choice is extremely limited.

In the beginning, people who were looking to start vaping were faced with a typical cig-a-like or an extremely basic electronic cigarette that may not satisfy their needs.

In their infancy, electronic cigarettes were not produced with a mechanism to allow vapers to control the amount of vapour or throat hit produced. However, this has changed with a vast majority of e-cigs being variable output.

You can control your throat hit and nicotine delivery by turning up your output wattage or voltage and changing your atomizer head resistance.

The elevated the resistance the longer the atomizer takes to heat up. The lower the resistance (usually sub-ohm) the quicker your atomizer will heat up.

It is all about finding the right balance of vape mod, e-cig tank and atomizer head, the right combination will end up complimenting your e-liquid strength and allowing you to vape all day without craving a cigarette.

Vaping Technique

Vaping it MTL = Mouth to lung

This is one conventional way of inhaling that most people use today. To do this, you can draw the vapour from your e-cig into your mouth and then inhale it back.

Vaping it DL = Direct lung

The mouth part from the Mouth to lung vaping is circumvented here. You take one long draw from the e-cig and inhale it straight in.

Taking a  Mouth To Lung draw is tolerant when it comes to nicotine strength. With it, you can use strengths from 0.0% up to 1.8% with no problems.

On the other hand, you wouldn’t do DL vaping on a high nicotine strength because using this technique implies that you get a much greater throat hit and produce more vapour. All of this can seem confusing, but it isn’t. In short, vape as you feel comfortable.

Selecting Your Nicotine Strength

Using the following guide you can gauge your nicotine strength

  1. If you smoke 5 to 10 cigarettes a day, the suggested Nicotine strength would be 0.6%
  2. If you smoke 5 or fewer cigarettes a day, the suggested Nicotine strength would be 1.0%
  3. When you smoke 5 to 20 cigarettes a day, the suggested Nicotine strength would be 1.4%
  4. When you smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day, the suggested Nicotine strength would be 1.8%

Your e-cig has a direct relevance on what strength e-liquid you should choose. If you have a sub-ohm atomizer and vape which has higher strength, you will probably need a lower nicotine power. Using low resistance atomizer heads and high-powered e-cigs would give a more noticeable throat hit and nicotine delivery.

When using an e-cig starter kit or lower-powered device, you would need to use a higher nicotine strength. The throat hit and nicotine delivery are not noticeable with higher resistance atomizer heads and lower powers.

The same can be said for vaping methods. When you need to inhale from your vape directly, go for lower nicotine strength. If you would prefer a more restricted draw from your vape then you would require an elevated strength e-liquid.

It is important to note that none of these are long-lasting and each vaper has his or her unique technique for vaping.
